The outer waterproof shell comprises two layers. Externally it has gussets to give depth to the outer cover to allow room for absorbency as well as ensure a great leak-free fit. Internally the inner gusset PUL is shaped to entirely cover the outer gusset stitching when on and thus prevent any seepage through stitching lines. At the centre of the inner side of the shell is a polyester fleece core, designed to hold excess moisture to the centre of the nappy, away from the edges. The downside of this absorbent fleece section is that unlike eg Mother-ease Duo, you can't simply wipe the inner surface and reuse with a new pad, you need to change the whole nappy. However the outers do dry relatively quickly, so if you buy a few extra inserts you'll always have dry inserts to use and keep the cost of this nappy system down
The PUL outer is well elasticated at the back, there is no elastic to the front to ensure this lies snuggly across baby's tummy - however to compensate, both front and back have an inner panel of PUL that goes over the top of the snap in soaker. This inner panel is around 6cm deep at the back. The front inner panel is shaped, so it's deeper at the sides and about 5cm deep in the centre. This panel's lower edge is very gently elasticated with a thin elastic so it sits slightly proud of the soaker and when done up this means the front and back panels act as a poo-catcher to prevent leaks. This nappy has stretchy PUL tabs to secure to the line of poppers or to the Aplix hook and loop fastening around the waist giving comfort as well as a good fit. The Aplix version additionally has fold back tabs for laundering hidden under the back panel so not touching baby.
With 4 rows of height adjusting poppers these nappies generally fit most babies from birth to potty ( 8lb (3.5kg) -35lb+ (16kg+)
The coloured inner soaker insert attaches to the outer with poppers - two small shallow poppers at the sides of the back to prevent discomfort to baby when lying down on their back, and two larger poppers at the sides of the soaker to the front - so your inner is always inserted the correct way round.
This soaker is made from 70% viscose bamboo/30% cotton terry pile work quick and generous absorbency, with a polyester base to the fabric to give stability and prevent shrinkage.
The soaker is shaped, being wider at the front and back, narrowing to around 14cm between the legs. It feels soft, thick and absorbent. The sides of the soaker are elasticated to prevent leaks on to the outer. There is also an additional booster made from the same fabric, which can be attached via a small popper to the front of the soaker if required and can be folded & positioned to suit absorbency needs.
The nappy as a whole as purchased is very absorbent but can also be boosted for night time use as there's plenty of room inside the shell, or alternatively there are separate Close PopIn night time boosters available separately.
Composition Outer: 100% polyester with PU coating - RPET, a low impact polyester material that is made from recycled plastic bottles, each nappy reuses the equivalent of 2½ plastic bottles. The Puffin print uses a plant-based bio waterproof laminate. It is petroleum free, using renewable plant-based materials made using a fermentation process which uses glucose derived from corn starch. Inner: soaker & booster 70% viscose bamboo/30% cotton pile with polyester core for strength& stability.
Washing Instructions: Machine at up to 60°, wash inner with similar colours at least initially, manufacturer recommends to use a non-bio detergent, to never use biological detergents, bleaching agents, enzymes or brighteners on your Pop-ins (most soaking solutions contain one or more of these) as they will deteriorate the fabric and will reduce the lifespan of your nappies, particularly the bamboo nappies. Likewise vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, washing sodas etc will all deteriorate the fabric. Fabric softeners or dryer sheets will coat your nappies making them less absorbent so avoid these too! Also avoid detergents with ingredients containing coconut oil as they may reduce absorbency. Do not tumble dry outer or place on direct head eg radiator, the inner may be tumble dried on low. Obviously tumble drying can be expensive, less good for the environment and adds to wear and tear on your nappy.
